Notes from the Artist: Mom and Baby Panda

Notes from the Artist: Mom and Baby Panda

Shortly after my son James was born, the Smithsonian Museum announced that the family of pandas would be headed back to China. I couldn't have a baby while we were living near the DC without making it to the zoo to see the pandas.

Shortly after my son James was born, the Smithsonian Museum announced that the family of pandas (Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their baby Xiao Qi Ji) would be headed back to China. I couldn't have a baby while we were living near the DC without making it to the zoo to see the pandas. So we bundled up one September day and headed out!

It's one of my favorite memories from postpartum. A snuggly baby in a carrier on my chest, my husband and my dear friend Hillary all made the trip. I was totally sleep deprived and exhausted but it was the best morning. We walked the exhibits, took photos, we drank coffee and we went out for brunch afterwards. I will always think of this day so fondly.

DC has since gotten a new pair of pandas. I can't wait to take my now toddler to see them when we get back from Ireland.

This trip ended up inspiring my collection of mom and baby animal canvases. It all started with the panda family. The belugas, and polar bears quickly followed. Then we also introduced giraffes, elephants and penguins came next.

This is one of my favorite collections and I continuously add to it. What animals would you like to see added next?
