Start simple!
When choosing your first needlepoint project, it’s important to start with something simple and manageable. Opt for a design that doesn’t involve intricate patterns or tiny details, as these can quickly become frustrating for beginners. Basic geometric shapes, such as squares or circles, or simple motifs like flowers or animals, can provide an enjoyable introduction to needlepoint without overwhelming you.
Choose 13 count!
Consider choosing a canvas with a larger hole size- I recommend 13-count- as it will make stitching easier and faster. Larger holes are easier to see and allow the needle to pass through more easily, helping you gain confidence with each stitch. Larger holes will lend themselves to mastering the Continental Stitch and then Basketweave, which will serve as the foundation for more complex techniques later on.
Pick something you love!
Finally, make sure to choose a project that excites you! Whether it’s a small pillow or ornament, the design should be something you’ll enjoy seeing come together. The more excited you are to stitch, the more motivated you’ll be to work on it day after day.
