One question I get asked time and time again is how do I pick my background stitches! Truth be told, it takes some time to master skill at doing this. Today I wanted to take the time to share three essential needlepoint stitches that look GREAT as backgrounds on almost any canvas. If you're not sure where to begin, this is a great place to start! Read on to get three of my favorites!

1. T-Stitch

T-Stitch looks great on just about any ornament. It is what is known as an open or light coverage background stitch, meaning you will see some canvas through your stitches. I often do T-Stitch in a sparkly thread like Silk Lamé Braid. This is a stitch that works on both small pieces and big ones too!

2. Vertical Double Brick Stitch

Vertical Double Brick Stitch is a background stitch that is easy to compensate! It also works well on large and small canvases alike. Vertical Double Brick Stitch is great for skies and water. It's a decorative stitch that you'll want to have in your toolbox.

3. Diagonal Mosaic Stitch

Diagonal Mosaic Stitch is a stitch I recommend time and time again if you're looking to dip your toe into decorative stitches. This is a great first stitch to try out! It is made up of alternating Tent Stitches and stitches over two canvas threads. Once you get in a groove with Diagonal Mosaic Stitch, it is one you will never forget how to do!

Try these stitches out on your next project and let us know what you think! They're stitches you will find all over the place in our stitch guides and will be so glad that you know!

Happy Stitching,
