So you're ready to start needlepointing? If you're unsure where to begin, you've come to the right place! Needlepoint doesn't have to be overly complicated and should be fun, not overwhelming. With the help of our top five tips for new stitchers, you'll be ready to pick out your first canvas and get started stitching today!
1. Pick a project on 13 count canvas.
There are two main mesh sizes that needlepoint canvases come painted on. 18 count or 13 count. The number refers to the number of needlepoint canvas intersections to the linear inch. Although it's counterintuitive, the smaller the number, the bigger the holes will be! We recommend 13 count needlepoint canvas for new stitchers because it is easier to see where your needle should go. Plus, your project will fly by!

2. Pick a project with minimal colors and large open spaces
You want to find a needlepoint canvas that doesn't have too many colors on it. If you find a needlepoint design with large areas, this will give you a chance to get the hang of the stitch you are trying to master. This will help you gain confidence for future needlepoint projects!
3. Pick a small canvas to start with.
Starting on a smaller needlepoint canvas, like an ornament, will keep you from feeling overwhelmed. You want to feel like you're making progress as you stitch and a smaller design will be finished faster. The sooner you finish your first canvas, the sooner you can move on to your second!
